Speakers for Capitol Hill Briefing

To help address this important topic, the program included four noted fisheries experts:

  • Mario Ramade, a professional oceanologist, discussed work carried out by local cooperatives (FEDECOOP) in Baja California's spiny lobster fishery.


  • Peter Halmay, a San Diego Fisherman, spoke on how the San Diego Watermen's Association is improving research and management of the local sea urchin fishery.


  • Michael Arbuckle,the former Ministry of Fisheries general manager, discussed legislative and other changes in the aftermath of IFQs in New Zealand.


  • Paul Parker,a fisherman and director of the Cape Cod Commercial Hook Fishermen's Association, spoke on efforts to improve local fisheries management while protecting local fishing traditions.
